Below are a number of programs and agencies that may be helpful to tenants and landlords. Click on the grey bar for a more in depth description.

Environmental Health, Rental Accommodations Program – Website

Environmental Health Officers work closely with tenants and landlords to ensure minimum health standards in residential rental accommodations are met. Legislative authority for this program includes the Public Health Act, Rental Accommodation Regulations. The activities under this program are complaint generated, and may originate from a tenant or a landlord. 

If you have a health-related concern about your rental property, the first point of contact is your landlord or property owner.  If your concerns are not addressed in a reasonable period of time, you may wish to contact an Environmental Health Officer.

Renting PEI – Website

Renting PEI helps tenants and landlords understand their legal rights and responsibilities. They provide legal information, referrals, as well as support during the rental hearing process. They also deliver workshops on tenants’ and landlords’ rights and responsibilities.

Renting PEI is a project of Community Legal Information. They are funded by the PEI Department of Housing, Land, and Communities.

Housing Assistance (PEI) – Website

Housing assistance provides low income Islanders with appropriate housing at a reduced cost. For qualified applicants, this might be renting a social housing unit or receiving a rent supplement that reduces the cost for rental market housing. The program is needs-based with priority given to those assessed to be in the greatest need.

Canadian Mental Health Association, Prince Edward Island Division – Website

The Canadian Mental Health Association (“CMHA”) is a non-profit mental health agency promoting the mental health of all Islanders. CMHA provides information, education and various supports designed to help all Islanders improve their mental wellness.  They may be able to provide support during the rental hearing process.

Island Waste Management Corporation – Website

Island Waste Management Corporation provides waste management services for all homes and businesses through PEI’s Waste Watch Program.  Their website provides detailed information on sorting guidelines, collection days, and frequently asked questions.  Click here for the comprehensive sorting guide.

PEI Human Rights Commission – Website

The Prince Edward Island Human Rights Commission (PEIHRC) is an independent agency that is responsible for administering and enforcing the Prince Edward Island Human Rights Act. The Act prohibits unequal and prejudicial treatment in certain areas (including rental housing) on the basis of certain personal characteristics, also known as prohibited grounds of discrimination.

Prince Edward Island Regulatory & Appeals Commission – Website

The Island Regulatory & Appeals Commission (“IRAC”) hears and considers appeals from decisions or Orders of the Rental Office. If you participate in a Hearing at the Rental Office, you are eligible to Appeal the decision if you disagree with any part of it.  Appeals to IRAC are open to the public and appeal Orders are posted to its public website.

Supreme Court of PEI – Website

The Supreme Court is the superior trial court for the province, hearing civil (including family) and criminal matters, appeals from administrative tribunals and appeals from the Provincial Court. Justices of this Court also have jurisdiction over probate and administration of estates matters. 

Orders issued by the Rental Office may be filed with the Supreme Court and then enforced as if they were Orders of the Court. Orders filed with the Court are subject to a recoverable filing fee.
